The Academy of the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) provides a learning platform for researchers who wish to learn how to use routine health care data for their projects. The free e-learning platform provides participants with insights into how to apply for and analyse such data in short, practical video presentations. Both organisational and methodological aspects are covered.
Experts from the German Biobank Node (GBN) and the German Biobank Alliance (GBA) have contributed their expertise to the MII Academy and provided a series of video presentations on various topics related to biobanking and research:
- ‘Introduction to biobanking’ and 'Stakeholders and biobanking' (both in German), speaker: Dr. Ronny Baber (Leipzig Medical Biobank)
- ‘Ethical and legal framework conditions in biobanking’ (in German), speaker: Prof. Dr. Roland Jahns (Interdisciplinary Biomaterial Bank and Database Würzburg)
- ‘Biobanking – quality management’ and 'Biobanking – sample quality' (both in German), speaker: PD Dr. Jörg Geiger (Interdisciplinary Biomaterial Bank and Database Würzburg)
- ‘Data management in biobanks’ (in English), speaker: PD Dr. Sara Nußbeck (GBN board spokesperson and head of the Central Biobank of the University Medical Centre Göttingen)
The MII Academy is particularly aimed at clinician scientists and those who wish to use data from the Data Integration Centres (DIC) in their research. The contributions from the GBN/GBA community provide an excellent opportunity to share knowledge about biobanking with researchers. Dr. Ronny Baber, GBN steering committee member: "Biobanking is an important resource for research. It is vital that we communicate the opportunities and challenges of handling biospecimens and associated data to researchers in an understandable and practical way.“
